Newly appointed TAMIU men’s head basketball coach Bryan Weakley wasted no time in his first full day on the job, locking in two more junior college transfers for the 2012-13 class. Tuesday afternoon Coach Weakley and his staff announced the signing of Cephas Oglesby, a 6’1” junior combo guard, and Randell Jones, a 6’6” junior forward both from Cape Fear Community College.
Coach Weakley says with the loss of big time contributors from last season, it was imperative to bring in players who were well coached and played in winning programs. “Both of these guys have learned under NJCAA Region 10 Coach of the Year Ryan Mantlo. During their time at Cape Fear they both won a regional championship and advanced to the Junior College National Tournament. Coach Mantlo has done a phenomenal job with the Cape Fear program and with Randell and Cephas.”
Cephas Oglesby – 6’1” Guard – Jr. - Cape Fear CC: Oglesby joins the Dustdevils after two years with Cape Fear Community College located in Wilmington, North Carolina. Oglesby leaves the Sea Devils as the school’s all-time leading scorer (1,015 points) and recently recorded the first 1,000 point season in school history.
Stats:
Sophomore year (09-10) – Led the Sea Devils to a 23-4 record averaging a team high 17.2 points per game … Single game high 30 points against Central Carolina … Ranked 41st player on JUCO Junction's list of top 150 junior college players in the country … NJCAA All American
Freshman year (08-09) – Led the Sea Devils to a 20-14 record while winning the Region X championship, earning the school's first trip ever to the NJCAA National Tournament in Hutchinson, Kansas ... Named team MVP after averaging 16.6 point per game
Oglesby redshirted at Towson University due to injury in the ’10-11 season and did not return to the program the following year. He will have 2 years of eligibility remaining
Coach Weakley: “Cephas will bring great athleticism and scoring to our program. He was an All American and heavily recruited in junior college and has the talent to be a tremendous player in the Heartland Conference. We are expecting him to do big things for us.”
Randell Jones – 6’6” Forward – Jr. - Cape Fear CC: Jones also comes to TAMIU after two seasons at Cape Fear Community College. In his most recent season averaged 7.6 points per game and six rebounds per game while shooting 59 percent from the field.
Stats:
Sophmore Year (11-12) – Started for the Sea Devils at the forward position, finishing 2nd on the team in field goal percentage and was the team’s second leading rebounder.
Freshman year (10-11) - He was instrumental in helping his team have a 26-9 record, winning the Region X Championship, and earning a trip to the NJCAA National Tournament. He helped the Sea Devils finish 8th in the country.
Coach Weakley: “Randell is a workhorse. He has a nonstop motor, is really athletic, and plays extremely hard and physical on both ends of the floor. He knows what kind of effort it takes to win games. Because he has the ability to play inside and out, he will fit well in our system.”
