LAREDO, Texas (November 16, 2016) - Texas A&M International University Women's Basketball Coach
Jeff Caha has announced the signing of local Laredo star, Dannia Gonzalez. A 5' 10" guard from Alexander High School, Dannia will bring instant offense from all over the court and high energy to the Dustdevil squad in the 2017-2018 season.
Head Coach
Jeff Caha commented on the signing, "Coming to Laredo, I knew there were local players that could contribute. I told many coaches that if a local kid was capable of playing at the 4 year level, that it was my priority to get them to stay home. After speaking to many local coaches, including Coach Cardenas at Alexander, I started to figure out that Dannia had the type of character and talent we were looking for in building this program. My thoughts were solidified after meeting with Dannia, building a relationship with her, and working her out on the court. Dannia has all the tools to become a very good college player for years to come, and Im very excited that it will happen in a TAMIU jersey"
"The first time we met, Dannia had an infectious smile and all she could talk about was doing whatever it takes to improve as a player and to be a part of a winning team. Her success as an individual is great, but the amount of success as a team at Alexander is a huge characteristic we value. We want to recruit winners, and Dannia is definitely that. She comes from a great family with two amazing parents that have taught her the value of hard work. As soon as she committed, I knew we had landed a great kid that was going to help us accomplish our goals going forward."
Last season, Dannia was named the MVP of the Border Olympics/UISD Tournament in December while also taking home the UIL Region IV Offensive Player of the Year. Alexander went 31-9 on the year before finishing the season in the UIL Region Semi-Final game. That marked the 3
rd straight year that Dannia and Alexander High School had reached the Regional Semi-Final.
