Final Stats
Texas A&M International University played two solid halves against St. Mary's on Friday afternoon at Dustdevil Field. The result was a convincing 4-1 Heartland Conference win over the Rattlers.
TAMIU (6-8-2, 2-5-2 Heartland) jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead on goals by Adeyemi Gill in the fifth minute and Abdiel Amador in the seventh minute. Gill's opening score was set up by a crafty pass from the 40 yard line by Gregory Mulamba. After receiving the pass Gill dribbled past one defender before putting the ball in the net from 18 yards out.
Jorge Zanata boosted TAMIU to a 3-0 lead with a short-range goal in the 27th minute. The Dustdevil defense took control at that point and the game went to halftime with that score.
St. Mary's (7-11, 4-5) stepped it up at the beginning of the second half but the Rattlers' only score came on a Kris Sumter goal in the 52nd minute. Playing in his second to last game as a Dustdevil, senior Raul Quinoñes lifted TAMIU to an insurmountable 4-1 lead with a shot into the net from 20 yards out in the 67th minute.
Starting goalkeeper Juan Pablo Muñoz finished with four saves in 75 minutes for the Dustdevils. Noé Pantoja made one save in 15 minutes in a relief role.
TAMIU closes out the season on Sunday with a home game against Heartland Conference power Incarnate Word. Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Dustdevil Field.
