Javelinas Get Past Dustdevils In Overtime

Texas A&M-Kingsville defeated Texas A&M International University 85-82 in overtime on Monday night in Kingsville.

TAMUK (7-2) led 44-31 at halftime but TAMIU fought back throughout the second half to send the game to overtime. Kingsville led by 10 points at the 7:20 mark and seven points at the 1:24 mark of regulation. TAMIU (3-3) tied the game for the first time in the second half on two free throws by Sean Tucker with 18 seconds remaining in regulation.

TAMIU jumped out to a 78-75 lead early in the overtime period on a layup and subsequent free throw by Chris Swan. The two teams then traded the lead before TAMUK took an 81-80 lead on a Wendell Mulkey jumper at the 1:37 mark.

Mulkey pushed the lead to 83-80 on a dunk at the 1:15 mark. Chris Swan cut the lead to 83-82 on a layup with 33 seconds remaining before TAMUK's Adan Montalvo iced the game with two free throws with 19 seconds remaining. Swan missed two free throws with five seconds remaining.

Four players scored in double-figures for the TAMIU with Swan leading the way with 21 points. He also contributed a team-high seven rebounds and three steals. Sean Tucker and Derek Barnes finished with 16 points apiece for the Dustdevils.

The win secures a 2-0 season sweep for the Javelinas over the Dustdevils. TAMUK now leads the all-time series 8-0.

TAMIU will take an eleven-day break before returning to action on Dec. 28 for a road game against defending Sun Belt Conference champion North Texas. The contest will be TAMIU's first regular season game against a NCAA Division I opponent since dropping a 85-57 decision at UT-Pan American on Jan. 15, 2007.
