Texas A&M International University snapped a four-game losing streak with a 59-56 win over Newman in Heartland Conference action on Thursday night at the Kinesiology & Convocation Building. The game was a back-and-forth affair throughout the evening with Dustdevil hustle making the difference in the end.
Krystal Benson-Cooper made a crucial play at the 2:00 minute mark to push the Dustdevils to a 58-54 lead. She recorded a diving steal in the lane before making a lay-up and subsequent free throw to give the Dustdevils the four-point lead.
TAMIU (6-12, 2-4 Heartland) would finish with a 5-2 rebounding edge after Benson-Cooper's hustle play. Nicole Gipson recorded two of her team-high nine rebounds during that stretch.
Valerie Villanueva and Jasmine June led the Dustdevils with 12 points apiece. Mary Tobias contributed 10 points and five assists and Benson-Cooper finished with nine points and eight rebounds.
Gretchen Berns led Newman (4-15, 2-4) with 20 points.
TAMIU returns to action on Saturday with a home game against Lincoln. Tip-off is scheduled for 4 p.m.
