Texas A&M International University defeated St. Mary's 25-21, 25-21, 20-25, 25-21 in Heartland Conference action on Saturday afternoon at the Kinesiology & Convocation Building on campus. The positive result snaps a nine-match Dustdevil losing streak.
TAMIU (5-20, 2-9 Heartland) finished the first two sets strong, winning after breaking a 19-19 tie in the first set and an 18-18 tie in the second set. St. Mary's (8-14, 5-6) jumped out to a 13-6 lead en route to a third set win.
The Rattlers led 21-19 in the fourth set before the Dustdevils secured the win with six straight points. Brittany Smith accounted for three of those points with kills, including two straight to end the match.
Nicole Gipson led the Dustdevils with 16 kills. Smith finished with 12 kills, Madison Mojica with a team-high 20 digs and Danielle Gilley with a team-high 50 assists.
TAMIU returns to action with a non-conference home match against Texas A&M-Kingsville on Monday night. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
