Dustdevils Win Again In Home Finale

Oct. 31, 2008

Final Stats

Texas A&M International University did what it had to do in Friday night's home regular season finale. Playing short-handed due to card suspensions, the Dustdevils had just enough to defeat Eastern New Mexico 1-0 to extend the school-record winning streak to nine games. The non-conference win also sets up two very important road games next week.

Enrique Reyes scored the only goal of the game by drilling a back-and-forth pass from Albert Escovar into the left side of the net from 13 yards in the 25th minute. TAMIU (12-4 overall) finished with a 6-2 edge in shots on goal but ENMU(5-8-2) goalkeeper Grant Shanahan would keep it close by making five saves.

Luis Rincon made two saves to help stretch TAMIU's shutout streak to four matches.

TAMIU will close out the regular season with road games at Incarnate Word on Nov. 7 and St. Edward's on Nov. 9. All three teams are currently atop the Heartland Conference standings with 15 points apiece but UIW and SEU have played six conference games compared to TAMIU's eight Heartland contests.

A sweep of the two conference powers would put the Dustdevils in a great position for at least a tie for the Heartland Conference title. St. Edward's defeated TAMIU 1-0 in Laredo on Sept. 19 and Incarnate Word edged the Dustdevils 2-0 at Dustdevil Field on Sept. 21. TAMIU has not lost since dropping that contest to the Cardinals.
