Dustdevils Drop Season Opener

Western New Mexico defeated Texas A&M International University 79-71 in the season opener for the Dustdevils on Monday evening in Silver City, N.M.

After leading 39-33 at the half TAMIU (0-1) would open the second half with a 9-5 run to take a 48-38 lead on a three-pointer by Valarie Villanueva at the 17:28 mark of the second half. WNMU (2-0) fought back and the teams exchanged the lead a couple of times over the next 12 minutes.

Mary Tobias would hit two free throws to cut WNMU's lead to 63-61 at the 5:30 mark but the Mustangs would respond with a 10-0 run to build an insurmountable 73-61 lead at the 2:50 mark. The Dustdevils would get no closer than eight points the rest of the way.

Jasmine June and Villanueva led TAMIU with 14 points apiece while Krystal Manning and Mary Tobias contributed 13 points apiece. Chevelle Hoyle and Christina Tristan led the team with eight rebounds apiece.

TAMIU returns to action this weekend by hosting the La Quinta Inn/TAMIU Tip-Off Classic. The Dustdevils will face Sul Ross State on Friday night and Johnson & Wales on Sunday. Friday night's tip-off against the Lobos is scheduled for 7 p.m.
