Final Stats
Nationally-ranked Tarleton State defeated Texas A&M International University 83-67 in second day action at the TSU Texan Tip-Off Classic on Saturday in Stephenville. The Texans are ranked 19th in the latest NCAA Division II Basketball poll.
TAMIU (2-3) held an early 6-3 lead but TSU (3-0) took a 19-9 lead on a jumper by Tyler Rushing at the 10:08 mark of the first half. The Texans lead would stretch to 13 points before the Dustdevils made a run to cut the lead to 30-22 at halftime.
The Dustdevils got within five points three times in the second half, the last time on a Jasper Garrett dunk at the 4:48 mark that cut the Tarleton lead to 64-59. Derek Barnes made two free throws at the 2:35 mark to cut the lead to 74-65 but the Texans made nine of 10 free throws the rest of the way to secure the win.
Garrett and Spencer Foreman led the Dustdevils with 10 points apiece. Mark Walton contributed a team-high five rebounds.
TAMIU will take over a week off before returning to action on Tuesday, Dec. 2 with a home game against Texas A&M-Kingsville. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the TAMIU Kinesiology & Convocation Building.
