Texas A&M-Kingsville held off a late rally to defeat Texas A&M International University 55-51 on Tuesday night at the TAMIU Kinesiology & Convocation Building. The result avenged a Dustdevil win over the Javelinas on Nov. 18 in Kingsville.
TAMIU (2-4) made only six of 26 field goals in the first half and trailed TAMUK 29-15 at the break. The Javelinas would maintain a double-digit lead until Jerante Morgan made it 49-41 with a three-pointer at the 4:30 mark of the second half. The Dustdevils would score the next six points to cut the lead to 49-47 on a Morgan jumper with 2:56 remaining.
Wendell Mulkey hit a jumper for Kingsville (4-2) at the 2:27 mark but the Dustdevils would cut the lead to 51-49 on two free throws by Ignacio García with 57 seconds remaining. TAMIU would miss its final three field attempts of the game and Texas A&M-Kingsville escaped with the win. The Dustdevils made it a game by making 12 of 25 field goal attempts in the second half.
Jerante Morgan led the Dustdevils with 19 points and three blocks. Sean Tucker contributed a team-high six rebounds and Derek Barnes a team-high five assists.
TAMIU will play its next two games on the road against NCAA Division I opponents. The Dustdevils play at SMU on Friday and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi next Monday.
