Texans Edge Dustdevils In Season-Opener

Tarleton State defeated Texas A&M International University 6-4 in the season opener for both teams on Friday night at Veterans Field.

TAMIU (0-1) scored all of its runs in the fourth inning, staking a 4-2 lead on the strength of back-to-back two RBI singles by Arek Zambanini and Jason Bonugli.

Tarleton State reclaimed the 6-4 lead with a four-run sixth inning. The Texans put the first three runners on in that frame before Charlie Ulbricht started the scoring with a two RBI single up the middle against a drawn in infield.

Danny Morris (1-0) turned in an outstanding pitching performance for Tarleton State. He pitched a complete game, with five strikeouts and only one walk. He faced only five batters over the minimum after the fourth inning.

John Gonzales (0-1) took the loss in a relief role for the Dustdevils. He allowed two runs after entering the game with runners on first and second and no outs in the top of the sixth. Daniel Lopez got the start and struck out nine batters in 5.0 innings of work.

The two teams will conclude the season-opening series with a doubleheader tomorrow. Both games are scheduled for seven innings, first pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
