TAMIU Edges UT-Permain Basin In OT

Texas A&M International University defeated UT-Permian 97-90 in an overtime thriller on Saturday afternoon at the Kinesiology & Convocation Building in the season finale for both teams. The Dustdevils end the season with a two-game winning streak.

TAMIU (10-16) held a 45-41 halftime lead. The game was tight throughout the second half with UTPB (11-16) going ahead 67-66 on a three-pointer by Luther Thomas at the 6:49 mark. TAMIU would take an 81-76 lead on a steal and layup by Derek Barnes at the 2:45 mark but UTPB finished the half with an 8-3 run to send the game to overtime.

Sean Tucker scored on a dunk off the tip and Kenny Taylor connected on a layup to push TAMIU to an 88-84 lead less than 30 seconds into the overtime period. UTPB would tie the score on four straight free throws but TAMIU finished the game with a 9-2 run to secure the win.

The Dustdevils made nine of 12 free throws in overtime, including five of six to stretch the 88-88 tie to a 93-90 lead with 2:06 remaining. Barnes made two free throws with 18 seconds remaining to boost the Dustdevils to a 95-90 lead.

Chris Swan led the Dustdevils with 25 points, eight rebounds and three blocks. Barnes and Tucker finished with 16 points apiece. Jerante Morgan and Ignacio García contributed 10 points apiece.
