March 29, 2008

Final Stats

Texas A&M International University pounded UT-Permian Basin 14-4 in Heartland Conference action on Saturday in Odessa. The win snapped a nine-game losing streak for the Dustdevils.

TAMIU (11-23, 10-18 Heartland) scored all of the runs it would need with an eight run top of the first. Rey Alvarez got the scoring started with a one out three RBI triple to right center. That big hit would be followed by a RBI single by Ricky Sánchez, two RBI double by Curtis Schell, sacrifice fly by Carlos Flores and RBI single by Jason Bonugli.

TAMIU built a 11-4 lead after three innings with Hugo Sánchez Jr. contributing a RBI single in the second and Danny Cornejo a two run home run in the third inning. The Dustdevils banged out 15 hits with Sánchez and Cornejo leading the way with three hits apiece.

Angel Encinas (4-2) picked up the win after allowing four runs on five hits in a 6.0 inning outing. Paul Routos pitched 3.0 scoreless innings to close the game, allowing only one walk and a leadoff single in the ninth inning.

TAMIU returns to action next weekend with a three game series at Panhandle State. The Aggies took three of four games from the Dustdevils earlier this season in Laredo.
