Newman Gets Past Dustdevils

Final Stats

Newman defeated Texas A&M International University 3-1 in Heartland Conference action on Sunday afternoon at Dustdevil Field.

Newman (3-3-2, 1-1 Heartland) took a 1-0 lead on a Jenna Streit goal in the 16th minute. TAMIU (1-8, 0-3) tied the score on a Valeria Chávez header into the net off of a Melissa Medrano penalty kick in the 33rd minute.

The tie did not last long, however, with Newman taking the lead for good on a Lacey Alost goal in the 34th minute. The Jets would add an insurance goal in the 55th minute when LaShella Alexander scored from the top of the box to stretch the lead to 3-1.

Freshman goalkeeper Sarah Salvidar made 10 saves in going the distance for the Dustdevils. Newman finished with a 24-5 shot advantage over TAMIU.

TAMIU returns to action next Saturday with a conference home game against Dallas Baptist. Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Dustdevil Field.
