Texas A&M International University opened Saturday afternoon's game against Oklahoma Panhandle State with An 11-0 run en route to an easy 86-66 Heartland Conference win. The 20-point margin of victory was the widest ever against a Heartland Conference opponent and the most in a conference game since an 86-47 Red River Athletic Conference win over Jarvis Christian on Feb. 27, 2006.
TAMIU (5-9, 1-0) led 44-15 at halftime before stretching the lead to 62-29 on a 3-pointer by Valerie Villanueva at the 13:38 mark of the second half. OPSU (1-13, 0-2) cut the lead to 80-64 on a 3-pointer by Nicole Candelaria at the 3:16 mark but the Aggies would get no closer than that 16-point deficit.
Five players scored in double-figures for the Dustdevils with a total of 13 players seeing action. Mary Tobias led the team with 20 points and eight rebounds. Jasmine June finished with 16 points, Villanueva with 15 points, Chevelle Hoyle with 11 points and Krystal Manning with 10 points. Villanueva also contributed six steals and three assists.
TAMIU returns to action with its final non-conference game of the season on Tuesday night at UT-Pan American. Tip-off is scheduled for 5 p.m. The Dustdevils return to Heartland Conference play next Saturday at Incarnate Word.
