Final Stats
Incarnate Word defeated Texas A&M International University 86-72 in Heartland Conference action on Saturday afternoon at the McDermott Center on the UIW campus in San Antonio.
The game was close early with TAMIU (4-10, 2-2 Heartland) taking a 13-12 lead on a jumper by Antron Pippen at the 12:53 mark of the first half. UIW (12-4, 4-1) responded with a 22-4 run to take a 34-17 lead at the 5:34 mark. The Cardinals would claim a 45-30 halftime lead.
TAMIU cut the lead to 50-41 on a 3-pointer by Sean Tucker at the 17:09 mark of the second half but UIW scored the next eight points to build an insurmountable 58-41 lead at the 14:41 mark. The Dustdevils would fight back once again, cutting the lead to 77-67 on two free throws by Pippen at the 2:52 mark but Cardinals would bump the lead to 81-67 on two free throws by Eric Nuncio at the 1:41 mark.
Pippen led the Dustdevils with a season-high 17 points to go with five rebounds. Derek Barnes contributed 16 points and Ignacio García finished with 14 points.
TAMIU returns to action on Thursday with a Heartland Conference contest at St. Mary's. Tip-off is scheduled for 8 p.m.
