Final Stats
A barrage of eight second half 3-pointers led Texas A&M International University to a 76-73 Heartland Conference upset of Incarnate Word on Saturday afternoon in San Antonio. The result marks one of the biggest TAMIU wins in years while improving the Dustdevil all-time record against the Cardinals to 2-6.
The back-and-forth game was tied 11 times with eight lead changes. Incarnate Word (10-6, 2-1 Heartland) finished the first half with a 9-4 run to stake a 35-30 halftime lead. UIW led by as many as seven points early in the second half but TAMIU (6-10, 3-0) fought back to take a 65-61 lead on a 3-pointer by Valerie Villanueva at the 5:48 mark of the second half.
The lead would then change three times before Krystal Manning pushed the Dustdevils to a 74-73 lead with two free throws with 33 seconds remaining in regulation. TAMIU forced two turnovers while making two of four free throws the rest of the way to secure the landmark win.
TAMIU finished with 12 3-pointers for the game, marking the fifth time this season the Dustdevils have made 10-plus treys in a game. The Dustdevils have a perfect 5-0 record in those games. TAMIU also forced 26 turnovers, marking the 14th time in 16 games this season the Dustdevil opponent has committed 20-plus turnovers.
Four players scored in double-figures with Manning and Mary Tobias leading the way with 20 points apiece. That point total marks a career-high for Manning, who also finished with five steals.
Jasmine June contributed 12 points, nine rebounds and three assists and Villanueva finished with 10 points and four assists.
TAMIU returns to action on Thursday at St. Mary's. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
