Texas A&M International University made a furious comeback but fell just a little short in a 60-55 loss to St. Mary's in Heartland Conference action on Thursday night at Bill Greehey Arena in San Antonio.
St. Mary's (8-8, 3-2 Heartland) opened the second half with a 9-2 run to stretch a 31-29 lead to 40-31 at the 17:03 mark. The lead would be cut to five points twice before expanding to 55-42 at the 6:40 mark.
TAMIU (4-11, 2-3) would get back into the game by going on a 9-0 run to cut the lead to 55-51 at the 2:16 mark. Both teams then made two free throws apiece before Sean Tucker cut the deficit to 57-55 with a jumper with 16 seconds remaining in regulation.
TAMIU's José Alicea fouled Nick Morey on the ensuing possession. Morey made the first free throw and missed the second. Sean Tucker grabbed the rebound but Jeffrey Campbell sealed the win for the Rattlers with a steal from Mathews Smith and a dunk with seconds remaining.
Tucker led the Dustdevils with 20 points and seven rebounds. Ignacio García finished with 12 points and a team-high eight rebounds.
TAMIU returns to action on Saturday at St. Edward's. Tip-off against the Hilltoppers is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
