A 50-point second half led Newman to a 90-70 Heartland Conference win over Texas A&M International University on Thursday night at Fugate Gymnasium at the NU campus in Wichita, Kan.
TAMIU jumped out to an early 11-6 lead against the Jets. The lead would change a couple of times before Newman went on a 6-0 run to build a 40-32 lead at the 2:14 mark of the first half.
TAMIU answered with a 17-2 run over the final two minutes of the first half and the first two and a half minutes of the second half to build a 49-42 lead. The Dustdevil lead would be cut to two points before Ignacio García made two free throws to boost it to 59-53 at the 13:28 mark.
Newman responded to the six-point deficit with a crushing 23-2 run that built a 76-61 lead at the 5:33 mark. The Dustdevils would get no closer than 11 points the rest of the game.
Newman connected on 17 of 34 field goal attempts in the second half compared to TAMIU's 10 of 29 shooting performance.
Derek Barnes led the Dustdevils with 18 points. García finished with 14 points and eight rebounds and Chris Buttermore contributed 13 points and three blocks.
TAMIU returns to action on Saturday at Lincoln. Tip-off is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. at the LU campus in Jefferson City, Mo.
