Jets Get Past Dustdevils

Newman defeated Texas A&M International University 66-63 in Heartland Conference action on Thursday night at Fugate Gymnasium on the NU campus in Wichita, Kan.

Newman (6-13, 3-3 Heartland) started the game with an 11-2 run. The Jet lead stood at 21-10 at the 9:57 mark of the first half before TAMIU (7-11, 4-2) fought back to tie the score 26-26 on a 3-pointer by Krystal Manning at the 3:27 mark. The Dustdevils would miss six 3-point attempts the rest of the half and the Jets went on a 10-0 run to take a 36-26 lead at intermission.

The lead would be cut to eight points several times early in the second half before Newman pushed it to 61-46 on a free throw at the 5:13 mark. The Dustdevils would fight back again, cutting the lead to 65-63 on a 3-pointer by Valerie Villanueva at the 1:34 mark. The comeback stalled, however, with TAMIU missing two field goal attempts and two free throw attempts the rest of the way.

Mary Tobias led the Dustdevils with 18 points. Manning finished with 16 points and Villanueva contributed with her first career double-double, 10 points and 10 rebounds.

TAMIU will remain on the road to face Lincoln on Saturday. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m.
