Final Stats
Texas A&M International University defeated UT-Permian Basin 72-64 in the Heartland Conference opener for both teams on Thursday night at the TAMIU Kinesiology & Convocation Building. The result snapped an eight-game Dustdevil losing streak.
The Dustdevils led 38-25 at halftime and stretched that lead to 59-40 on a free throw by Jasmine June at the 8:57 mark of the second half. The lead stood at 65-55 at the 5:22 mark before UTPB (2-10, 0-1 Heartland) steadily cut it down to 68-64 on a layup by Tammy Acosta with 40 seconds remaining in regulation.
TAMIU (4-9, 1-0) made four of four free throws over the final 30 seconds to secure the win.
Jasmine June led the Dustdevils with 25 points and 11 rebounds. Mary Tobias finished with 16 points and Beth Hampton finished with a season-high 14 points.
TAMIU returns to action on Saturday afternoon with a home conference game against Oklahoma Panhandle State. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m.
