UT-Brownsville Edges TAMIU In Overtime

UT-Brownsville defeated Texas A&M International University 2-1 in overtime non-conference action on Monday night in Brownsville. A short-handed Dustdevil squad hung tough against the 14th ranked team in NAIA soccer before giving up the game-winning goal with 1:21 left in the second and final overtime period.

UTB (15-0-1) finished with a decisive 33-8 edge in shots taken but TAMIU goalkeeper Luis Rincon kept the Dustdevils in the game by making 10 saves. TAMIU did not get a shot off in overtime, allowing six shots before Steve Howard punched in the winning goal for the Scorpions.

Senior Roy Hernández scored his team-leading sixth goal of the season in the 34th minute to tie the score 1-1.

TAMIU (5-8-3) will close-out the season with Heartland Conference home games against St. Edward's on Friday and Incarnate Word on Sunday. SEU has already clinched the conference regular season title but TAMIU enters the weekend with a shot at second place.
