Texas A&M International University defeated Huston-Tillotson 78-65 on Friday afternoon at the Kingsville Turkey Day Shootout, hosted by Texas A&M-Kingsville. A 47-point second half powered the Dustdevils to their first win of the season.
The game was tied 31-31 at halftime. It then went back-and-forth in the second half before TAMIU (1-3) created a little breathing room by taking a 68-58 lead with 3:23 remaining.
Short-handed Huston-Tillotson (2-4) would get no closer than eight points the rest of the game. HTU played the game with only six players.
TAMIU had its best shooting outing of the season in the win over the Rams. The Dustdevils made 29 of 62 field goal attempts (48.8 %) compared to 27 of 79 field goals made (34.2 %) made by Huston-Tillotson. The Dustdevils dominated the boards, finishing with a 59-30 rebounding edge but 35 turnovers hurt the TAMIU effort.
Latreshe Jones came off the bench to lead the Dustdevils with 16 points in 22 minutes played. Kinandra Mrtoyer and Mary Tobias contributed 15 points apiece, Courtney Dixon 12 points and Christina Tristan 10 points.
Tristan and Tobias shared the team lead with 10 rebounds apiece.
TAMIU concludes the tournament tomorrow against Lone Star Conference foe Texas A&M-Commerce. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m.
