Newman Beats TAMIU By 14 Points In Heartland Conference Action

Newman defeated Texas A&M International University 71-57 in Heartland Conference on Saturday afternoon at Fugate Gym on the NU campus in Wichita, Kan. The win pushes the Jets to a 3-2 lead in the all-time series between the two teams.

Newman (8-2, 2-0 Heartland) jumped out to an early 12-7 lead but TAMIU (3-7, 1-1) would fight back to take a 29-19 lead on a layup by St. Paul Latham at the 5:20 mark of the first half.

The Dustdevils missed 6 of 7 field goal attempts and 4 of 4 free throw attempts after taking the 10-point lead, allowing the Jets to finish the half with a 14-2 run to take a 33-31 lead at the break.

TAMIU took a 38-37 lead on a dunk by Latham at the 17:19 mark of the second half but Newman answered with a 12-2 run to take a 49-40 lead at the 12:34 mark. The Dustdevils would get no closer than 8 points the rest of the game.

TAMIU turned in a decent shooting night, making 20 of 43 field goal attempts (46.5 %). On the down side, the Dustdevils made only 12 of 24 free throw attempts (50 %) while committing 21 turnovers. Newman finished with a 38-28 rebounding edge.

Latham led the Dustdevils with a season-high 28 points. Will Faiivae contributed 13 points and a team-high 6 rebounds.

TAMIU will take an extended Christmas break before returning to action with a home game Arkansas-Fort Smith on Jan. 2.
