Final Stats
Texas A&M-Kingsville defeated Texas A&M International University 68-51 on Monday night at Hampton Inn Court on the TAMUK campus in Kingsville. The result improves Kingsville's record in the all-time series against TAMIU to 11-1.
TAMIU (2-6) held the lead for most of the first half. After jumping out to an 8-2 advantage the Dustdevils later led 22-16 at the 6:26 mark of the first half. TAMUK finished the half with a 14-3 run to take a 30-25 at the break.
TAMUK (6-1) led the entire second half. The Dustdevils cut the lead to 44-42 on a layup and free throw by St. Paul Latham at the 5:45 but the Javelinas answered with a 9-0 run to build an insurmountable 53-42 lead at the 4:01 mark.
TAMIU cut the deficit to 58-51 on two free throws by Bernard Burrell at the 1:33 mark before TAMUK ended the game with a 10-0 run to record the double-digit win.
St. Paul Latham led the Dustdevils with 18 points with Gary Matthews Jr. contributing eight points. Latham and Matthews tied for the team lead with six rebounds apiece.
TAMIU recorded its third-best shooting performance of the season, making 18 of 41 field goal attempts (43.9 %). On the negative side the Dustdevils committed a season-high 29 turnovers.
TAMIU will take nine days off before opening Heartland Conference play at Lincoln on Dec. 17 and Newman on Dec. 19.
