Final Stats
Texas A&M International University swept Oklahoma Panhandle State in Heartland Conference doubleheader action on Friday afternoon at Dustdevil Field on campus. The Dustdevils won the opener 3-2 before cruising to an 11-4 win in game two.
TAMIU won the opener despite being out-hit 8-2 by the Aggies. Ray Alvarez led off the game with a triple. He would later score on a RBI ground out by Ryan Flynn. The Dustdevils did not get another hit until Enrique Granados smashed a double in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Oklahoma Panhandle scored one run apiece in the second and third innings before TAMIU answered with two runs on no hits in the bottom of the third inning. The Dustdevils benefitted from two hit batters and two walks in the go-ahead inning.
Jorge Guarneros (1-0) threw a seven-inning complete game in the opener, picking up his first career win. He allowed only two hits after TAMIU took the 3-2 lead and he retired the last 10 batters he faced.
TAMIU (4-4, 3-2 Heartland) got the bats going early in game two, jumping out to a 7-0 lead after two innings. Freshman Zeke Sosa hit a two-run laser shot home run over the left field fence in the second inning to make the score 4-0 before Jason Bonugli pushed the lead to 7-0 with a two-RBI double to left center in the same frame.
Danny Cornejo, Bonugli and José Sánchez contributed RBI base hits in the sixth inning to push the Dustdevils to an insurmountable 11-2 lead.
B.J. Valadez improved to 2-0 for the season after allowing two runs on nine hits in a 6.0 inning effort. Freshman Danny Navarro picked up his first career save after allowing two runs on six hits in 3.0 innings of work.
TAMIU and Oklahoma Panhandle will conclude the series with a single nine-inning game tomorrow. First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m.
