Dustdevils Put Another Game In Win Column

Feb. 14, 2009

Final Stats

Texas A&M International University defeated Newman 70-65 in Heartland Conference action on Saturday afternoon at the TAMIU Kinesiology & Convocation Building. The win avenged a 66-60 NU win over the Dustdevils on Jan. 29 in Wichita, Kan.

Newman (6-17, 3-7 Heartland) led 25-23 at the 4:49 mark of the first half but TAMIU (10-13, 7-3) went on a 13-5 run to take a 36-30 halftime lead. The lead went to 10 points early in the second half but Newman battled back to cut the deficit to 48-42 at the 12:30 mark.

TAMIU got back on track at that point, stretching the lead to 60-45 on back-to-back 3-pointers by Mary Tobias and Krystal Manning midway through the period. Newman fought back again, cutting the lead to 68-63 on a jumper at the 2:03 mark.

The Jets missed their next four field goal attempts, however, before making two free throws with 26 second remaining. The Dustdevils secured another important win with two Krystal Manning free throws with six seconds remaining in regulation.

Chevelle Hoyle led the Dustdevils with 16 points and six rebounds. Tobias contributed 15 points and Valerie Villanueva finished with a team-high five assists.

TAMIU returns to action next Saturday with a home game against St. Edward's. A win over the Hilltoppers would go a long way in securing a third place finish for the Dustdevils in the Heartland Conference regular season standings.
