Final Stats
Incarnate Word swept Texas A&M International University in Heartland Conference doubleheader action on Friday afternoon at Dustdevil Field. The Cardinals rallied for a 4-2 win in game one before cruising to a 7-3 win in the second game.
A RBI-single by Zeke Sosa and a run scored on a wild pitch in the third inning pushed TAMIU to 2-1 lead in the opener. Starting pitcher Jorge Guarneros then scattered four singles with no runs scored over the next three innings and the Dustdevils went to the seventh with the one-run lead.
Incarnate Word would rally in the top of the seventh off of three TAMIU pitchers. The leadoff hitter, Tyler Jett, reached on a single to right field before the next two batters reached on bunt singles that were intended to be sacrifice bunts. All three runners scored, on two sacrifice flies and a wild pitch, to provide UIW a 4-2 lead.
Incarnate Word starter Kirk Jewasko retired the Dustdevils in order in the bottom of the seventh to pick up the complete game win. Guarneros (1-1) took the loss for the Dustdevils after allowing four runs (three earned) on nine hits in 6.1 innings of work.
Enrique Grandados scored an unearned run in the bottom of the second to provide TAMIU a 1-0 lead in the second game. Matt Roohan answered with a two-RBI double in the top of the third to give UIW a 2-1 lead. The Cardinals scored in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to build a 7-1 lead.
TAMIU scored twice in the bottom of the seventh, on a RBI-single by Ryan Flynn and a balk, but it would not be enough to push the game into extra innings.
B.J. Valadez (2-1) took the loss for the Dustdevils. He allowed five runs (three earned) on six hits in a 4.0 inning effort.
TAMIU and UIW will conclude the four-game series with a doubleheader tomorrow. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
