St. Edward's Sweeps TAMIU

March 15, 2009

Final Stats

St. Edward's swept Texas A&M International University in Heartland Conference action on Sunday afternoon at Dustdevil Field. The Hilltoppers won the opener 3-1 before securing a three-game series sweep with a 6-5 win in game two.

SEU scored two unearned runs in the first inning and an earned run in the second inning off TAMIU starter John Gonzáles in the opener. That's all the offense the Hilltoppers would need.

TAMIU scored its lone run of the game on a leadoff home run by Rey Alvarez in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Gonzáles (3-2) took the loss despite allowing only one earned run on four hits. He allowed only one hit, a single, after the second inning.

St. Edward's (15-10, 14-7 Heartland) held a comfortable 4-1 lead after seven innings in game two. Two consecutive Hilltopper errors in the bottom of the eighth inning led to three TAMIU (10-13, 9-11) unearned runs that tied the score 4-4.

The game remained tied until the Hilltoppers took a 6-4 lead with two runs in the top of the 12th inning. The first three Dustdevil runners reached base in the bottom of the 12th but the game ended when TAMIU managed only one run out of the situation.

The game ended with two force outs at home on fielder's choice ground balls to third base and a fly out to center by Ryan Flynn.

Jorge Guarneros (3-2) took the loss in a relief role. Roger González kept TAMIU in the game with an outstanding relief outing. He entered the game with TAMIU trailing 4-0 in the top of the second inning before holding the hot-hitting Hilltoppers scoreless for 7.2 innings.

TAMIU will return to action with a non-conference game at Texas A&M-Kingsville on Tuesday. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
