Dustdevils Split With Cardinals

Texas A&M International split a Heartland Conference doubleheader with Incarnate Word on Saturday afternoon at Cardinal Field in San Antonio. UIW won the opener 10-6 before TAMIU salvaged a win in the four-game series with a 5-2 win in game two.

Incarnate Word scored six runs in the bottom of the first in the opener and led 8-2 after five innings. Victoria Beltrán (14-12) took the loss after allowing five runs in two-thirds of an inning before being relieved by Clarissa Salinas.

Courtney Smith and Beltrán combined to limit the Cardinals to two runs on seven hits in game two. Smith (6-0) got the win after allowing one earned run on three hits in 4.0 innings of work and Beltrán was credited with the save with one run allowed on four hits in 3.0 innings.

Samantha García contributed three hits and Angel Montejano two RBI in the win. Montejano's ground out RBI in the sixth inning lifted the Dustdevils to a 4-1 lead.

TAMIU (22-15, 11-5 Heartland) returns to action next Friday with a home doubleheader against St. Mary's. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
