Final Stats

Newman swept Texas A&M International University in Heartland Conference doubleheader action on Saturday afternoon at Dustdevil Field, winning 13-8 in game one and 11-10 in game two. The sweep lifts the Jets to a 3-1 series win over the Dustdevils.

Newman (11-9, 10-8 Heartland) jumped out to a big lead in both games, scoring seven runs in the top of the first inning in both games. Seven TAMIU (10-10, 9-8) errors led to 11 unearned Newman runs for the day.

Newman led 8-0 in the opener before TAMIU cut the margin in half with four runs in the bottom of the second inning. The big hit in that frame was a 3-RBI bases loaded double by Rey Alvarez.

The Dustdevils kept coming, scoring three runs on four hits in the third to cut the deficit to 8-7. The Jets answered the rally with two runs apiece in the fourth and fifth innings to put the game away. The Dustdevils scored their final run on a RBI single by Ricky Hernández in the sixth inning.

James Santillan (1-3) took the loss after allowing eight runs (two earned) on six hits in a 1.1 inning outing.

Newman led 12-0 after an inning and a half in the second game, scoring seven runs in the first and five runs in the second inning. Three TAMIU errors assisted the Jets in the second inning.

TAMIU scored four runs in the second inning, starting off with a two-RBI single by Kike Granados. Santillan then hit a two-RBI double in the third to cut the deficit to 12-6.

The remained 12-6 until the Dustdevils scored five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to cut the Jet lead to 12-11. Hernández and Zeke Sosa contributed RBI singles in that frame and the Jets helped out with four errors.

The leadoff batter got on for Newman on a bunt single in the top of the seventh inning but Thomas Robulack grounded into an inning-ending double play three batters to end the threat.

Granados reached base on a Newman error in the bottom of the seventh inning but Newman preserved the win after Jet reliever Adam Clerici retired Carlos Flores on a batters interference call on an attempted sac bunt, Alvarez on a fly out to right and Hernández on a strike out swinging.

TAMIU starter B.J. Valadez (3-3) took the loss after allowing seven runs on seven hits in a brief 0.2 inning outing. Roger González pitched well in relief, allowing five runs (one earned) on six hits in a 6.1 inning effort.

TAMIU returns to action next weekend with a three-game home series against St. Edward's. First pitch in Friday's doubleheader is scheduled for 1 p.m.
