Final Stats
Incarnate Word defeated Texas A&M International University 5-0 in Heartland Conference action on Saturday afternoon at Sullivan Field on the UIW campus in San Antonio. The result wraps up a three-game series sweep for the Cardinals over the Dustdevils.
UIW (25-12, 22-10 Heartland) scored three runs on three hits in the fourth inning off TAMIU Starter B.J. Valdez to build an early lead. The Cardinals pushed the lead to 4-0 with an unearned run in the seventh inning before adding one insurance run in the eighth inning.
Valadez (3-8) took the loss after allowing five runs on seven hits in an 8.1 inning outing.
TAMIU (15-26, 13-22) managed five scattered hits off UIW pitchers Nathaniel Ramirez and Keith Vasquez. Danny Cornejo contributed the only extra bases hit with a two-out double off the left wall in the fifth inning.
The Dustdevils had two runners on base only once, in the eighth inning. That threat ended when Enrique Granados lined out to right field.
TAMIU returns to action on Tuesday with a non-conference game at UT-Brownsville. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
