Final Stats
Texas A&M International University wrapped up a three-game sweep over Heartland Conference foe Newman with a 16-13 win over the Jets on Saturday afternoon in Wichita, Kan. TAMIU achieved one of its best offensive weekends of the year in the sweep, finishing with a 40-28 edge in runs scored.
TAMIU broke open a 12-12 tie with a four-run top of the tenth in Saturday's finale. Ricky Hernández got the scoring started with a RBI double in that frame before Jorge Guareneros added a RBI single and Ryan Flynn another RBI double.
John Gonzáles (6-6) allowed a one out single in the bottom of the tenth but picked up the win after getting the next batter to ground into a game-ending double play.
TAMIU finished with 24 hits against five Newman pitchers. Four players; Rey Alvarez, Ryan Flynn, Hernández and José Sánchez Jr., finished with four hits apiece.
TAMIU (19-30, 17-25 Heartland) returns to action next weekend with its season finale road series at St. Edward's. The Dustdevils and Hilltoppers will play a four-game series with doubleheaders scheduled for Friday and Saturday.
