Final Stats
St. Edward's swept Texas A&M International University in a Heartland Conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Dustdevil Field. The Hilltoppers recorded a come-from-behind 6-3 win in game one before wrapping up a four-game series sweep with a 10-7 in game two.
TAMIU scored two unearned runs in the bottom of the first inning of the opener. A solo home run by Victoria Beltrán in the third inning would carry the Dustdevils to a 3-2 lead entering the seventh inning.
Lisa Paul led off the seventh for SEU with a solo home run that tied the score 3-3. The Hilltoppers would go on to add three runs on four hits and one TAMIU error to build a 6-3 lead. The Dustdevils went down in order in the bottom of the seventh, allowing SEU to escape with the win.
St. Edward's (38-19, 24-4 Heartland) jumped out to a 6-0 lead after three innings in game two. The Dustdevils recorded three runs apiece in the fourth and fifth innings to tie the score 6-6. The big blow in the rally was a three-run home run by Samantha García in the fifth inning.
The game was still tied 6-6 when the Dustdevils loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning. The threat ended when Ryanne Chapman popped out to the St. Edward's catcher on a squeeze bunt attempt and the catcher threw to third base to put out a charging García.
SEU opened the eighth inning with a single, home run and single en route to a four-run rally. TAMIU (25-29, 13-13) managed one run in the bottom of the eighth but the game ended on a Beltrán ground out.
Beltrán (15-18) took the loss in both ends of the doubleheader. She allowed a combined seven runs on 12 hits in 6.0 innings of relief work.
TAMIU returns to action at the Heartland Conference Tournament on Thursday. Bracket information will be provided on Monday.
