April 7, 2009

Final Stats

Texas A&M International University edged Texas A&M-Kingsville 8-7 in a 10-inning non-conference game on Tuesday afternoon at Dustdevil Field. The win snaps TAMIU's three-game losing streak to the Javelinas.

TAMIU (15-23) won the game in dramatic fashion in the bottom of the 10th inning. There were two outs with Ricky Hernández on first base before Rey Alvarez singled to right field and Carlos Flores walked to load the bases. TAMUK reliever Steven Hooker then walked Ryan Flynn on four straight pitches to push across the winning run for the Dustdevils.

TAMUK (17-24) scored three unearned runs in the top of the first inning to build an early lead. TAMIU scored six runs on four hits in the fifth inning to take a 7-3 lead. The scoring in the big inning was ignited by a two-out, two RBI single to right center by Flynn.

After taking the big lead TAMIU would only manage two singles over the next four innings, allowing TAMUK to tie the game with two runs in the eighth inning and one run in the ninth.

Dustdevil reliever John Gonzáles retired Kingsville in order in to top of the 10th inning, setting up the game-winning rally in the bottom of that frame. Gonzáles (5-5) was credited with the win after allowing one run on one hit in a 2.1 inning outing.

Starting pitcher James Santillan got a no decision despite allowing only one earned run in 7.0 innings or work. Four Dustdevil errors permitted the Javelinas to score three unearned runs off Santillan and one unearned run off Roger González.

TAMIU returns to action this weekend with a three-game Heartland Conference series at Incarnate Word. First pitch in Friday's doubleheader is scheduled for noon.
