Final Stats

Texas A&M International University spilt a Heartland Conference doubleheader with St. Edward's on Saturday at Lucian-Hamilton Field in Austin. The Dustdevils won the opener 3-2 and the Hilltoppers won the second game 11-6.

TAMIU got all of its offense in the top of the first inning in the opener, scoring three runs on five hits. Kike Granados drove in the first run on a safety squeeze bunt single before Ricky Hernández capped the inning with a two-out, two-run single to left field.

After scoring a run in the top of the first, Jorge Guarneros buckled down for a strong pitching performance. He contributed five shutout innings before allowing two runs (one earned) in the sixth inning.

John Gonzáles relieved Granados in the top of the seventh and allowed a one-out double to Hilltopper designated hitter Daniel Rufini. SEU would eventually load the bases with two outs but the win was preserved when Robert Hays flew out to Ricky Hernández.

Guarneros improved to 8-4 with the win while Gonzáles picked up his third save.

Two-run home runs by Gordon Muhammad Jr. in the first inning and Zeke Sosa in the fourth inning helped push TAMIU to a 6-5 lead in game two. St. Edward's would rally for three runs apiece in the fourth and sixth innings to get the win.

The Dustdevils managed just one hit after the Hilltoppers took an 8-6 lead in the fourth inning.

Gonzáles (6-7) took the loss after allowing eight runs (five earned) on nine hits in a 3.2 inning outing.

The two teams will conclude the series with a doubleheader tomorrow. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
