Final Stats
St. Edward's swept Texas A&M International University in Heartland Conference doubleheader action on Saturday afternoon at Lucien-Hamilton Field in Austin. SEU won both games in the bottom of the seventh inning by identical 8-7 scores.
TAMIU trailed 5-0 after three innings in the opener before rallying for three runs in the fourth inning and four runs in the fifth. Gordon Muhammad's two-run single in the fifth pushed the Dustdevils to a 7-5 lead.
St. Edward's scored one run in the bottom of the sixth inning to cut the deficit to one run before winning the game with a two-run seventh inning.
TAMIU scored five runs on three hits in the top of the first inning of game two to jump out to a quick lead. The big blow in that inning was a three-run home run to left center by Danny Cornejo.
Zeke Sosa added a two-run shot over the left field wall in the third inning to push the lead to 7-0. TAMIU managed only two hits, both singles, after taking the big lead and St. Edward's rallied to win for the 12th time in its last 14 games against the Dustdevils.
Jose Barrera (0-2) took the loss in both games in a relief role. He pitched well in game two but was nonetheless the losing pitcher after allowing two runs in a 2.2 inning outing.
TAMIU concludes the regular season next weekend with a home series against St. Mary's. First pitch in Friday's doubleheader is scheduled for noon.
