Newman scored two second half goals to edge Texas A&M International University 3-2 in Heartland Conference action on Sunday afternoon at Dustdevil Field. The game-winner for the Jets was scored in the 87th minute on a rebound shot from a shot deflected off the cross bar.
TAMIU (0-8-1, 0-2 Heartland) built a 2-1 halftime lead on goals by Sandy Hernández in the 10th minute and Rachel Carranza in the 25th minute. Hernández scored on a shot from 28 yards out and Carranza on a takeaway and shot from 12 yards out.
TAMIU's hopes for a win were not helped when Tiffany Sublett was issued a red card and ejected from the game in the 49th minute. Newman's Amanda Knabe scored a short-range goal a minute later to tie the score 2-2.
Despite playing a player down, TAMIU kept the game within range until Mallory Hurst put the ball in the net on the deflection from the cross bar with a little over two minutes remaining in regulation.
Newman (3-4-2, 1-1) out-shot TAMIU 20-3. Dustdevil goalkeeper Mary Jo Hall finished with eight saves compared to one save for Jet goalkeeper Christina Farid.
TAMIU returns to action on Thursday with a home conference game against UT-Permian Basin. Kickoff against the Falcons is scheduled for 5 p.m.
