TAMIU Ties St. Mary's In Heartland Conference Opener

Sept. 7, 2009

Final Stats

Texas A&M International University and St. Mary's tied 2-2 in Heartland Conference action on Monday night at Dustdevil Field. The game ended in a tie despite TAMIU out-shooting StMU 23-17 and the Rattlers playing a man down the last 77 minutes of the game.

St. Mary's (2-1-1, 0-0-1 Heartland) jumped out to a 1-0 lead when Daniel Kelly found the net from 12 yards out in the 29th minute. Rodrigo Ramos pushed the lead to 2-0 when he headed a long-distance free kick from Aaron Stares into the net in the 39th minute.

TAMIU started the second half with renewed determination and Roy Hernández cut the lead to 2-1 with a short-range goal in the 47th minute. He would then tie the score 2-2 with a successful penalty kick in the 53rd minute.

The Dustdevils took the majority of quality shots after the game was tied but none of them found the back of the net. Adeyemi Gill drew St. Mary's goalkeeper Brett Collier out in the 83rd minute but his shot at an open goal was just wide and Hernández missed a goal by only yards on a wide shot near the end of the second overtime.

Both goalkeepers played well, with Collier registering nine saves and TAMIU goalkeeper Luis Rincon finishing with eight saves.

TAMIU returns to action on Friday with a non-conference home game against Lone Conference foe Midwestern State. Kickoff against the Indians is scheduled for 7 p.m.
