Final Stats

Texas A&M International University opened the near year with a 63-40 non-conference win over Arkansas-Fort Smith on Saturday afternoon at the TAMIU Kinesiology and Convocation Building.

It was a record-setting defensive performance for the Dustdevils, who allowed the fewest points ever scored by an opponent. The previous low was established in a 77-47 win over UT-Permian Basin on Feb. 10, 2007.

TAMIU (4-7) held a slim 23-21 lead at the 5:10 mark of the first half before going on a 9-0 run to take a 30-21 lead at the break. The Dustdevils kept up the pressure and started the second half with a 10-0 run to build an insurmountable 40-21 lead at the 18:00 mark.

UAFS (1-10) would cut the lead to 13 points at the 15:29 mark but TAMIU turned it up a notch to take a 20-point lead at the 11:40 mark and a 30-point lead at the 7:18 mark.

TAMIU made 23 of 47 field goal attempts (48.9 %) while limiting UAFS to 13 of 53 shooting (24.5 %). The Dustdevils outrebounded the Lions 43-31.

Luis Gómez led TAMIU with 19 points with St. Paul Latham contributing 15 points and six assists. Will Faiivae finished with a team-high seven rebounds.

TAMIU returns to action on Monday afternoon with a home conference game against Dallas Baptist. Tip-off against the Patriots is scheduled for 5 p.m.
