Final Stats
Dallas Baptist defeated Texas A&M International University 71-66 in Heartland Conference action on Monday night at the TAMIU Kinesiology & Convocation Building.
TAMIU (4-8, 1-2 Heartland) took a 24-10 lead on a layup by Christian Jones at the 9:44 of the first half but DBU (7-4, 2-0) finished the half with a 21-11 run to cut the halftime deficit to 35-31.
The two teams traded the lead early in the second half before DBU's Braxton Adamson provided his team a 40-38 lead with a driving off-balanced layup at the 15:16 mark. That play sparked a 16-6 run that pushed the Patriots to a 54-44 lead at the 10:03 mark.
The DBU lead also stood at 10 points at the 5:54 but the Dustdevils had one more run to make. Luis Gómez cut the DBU lead to 68-66 on a 3-pointer at the 1:31 mark.
Armie Lewis made one of two free throws with 1:05 remaining to push DBU to a 69-66 lead. TAMIU missed three 3-pointers over the next minute, allowing the Patriots to seal the win with two free throws with five seconds left in regulation.
Bernard Burell finished with a team-high 17 points and 3 steals for the Dustdevils. Gómez contributed 16 points and 5 assists. Burrell and Chris Swan tied for the team lead with 8 rebounds apiece.
TAMIU returns to action on Thursday night with a home conference game against St. Mary's. Tip-off is scheduled for 8 p.m.
