Final Stats
Incarnate Word defeated Texas A&M International University 64-58 in Heartland Conference action on Saturday afternoon at the TAMIU Kinesiology and Convocation Building.
UIW (11-5, 6-0) jumped out to an early 18-8 lead before TAMIU (2-14, 1-3) went on a 22-13 run to cut the halftime deficit to 31-30.
Incarnate Word started the second half with another run that expanded the Cardinal lead to 48-35 at the 13:16 mark. The lead stood at 56-41 at the 8:10 mark and 61-51 at the 2:21 mark.
TAMIU did not quit, however, with a Courtney Dixon layup cutting the UIW lead to 61-58 with nine seconds remaining in regulation.
Cinnamon Kava tossed a court-length pass to Nia Torru on the ensuing inbounds pass and Torru secured the Cardinal win with a layup and free throw after being fouled by Kiandra Metoyer.
Johnna Williams led the Dustdevils with 17 points and 9 rebounds. Dixon contributed 14 points with Metoyer adding 10 points, 5 assists and 4 steals.
TAMIU finished with a 37-35 rebounding edge against the Cardinals.
TAMIU returns to action on Thursday with a Heartland Conference road game at Oklahoma Panhandle State. The Dustdevils will then play at UT-Permian Basin on Saturday.
