Midwestern State Gets Past TAMIU Again In Hard-Fought Contest

Oct. 1, 2010

Final Stats

Midwestern State remains the only unbeaten and untied team in NCAA Division II men's soccer after Friday night's 2-0 win over Texas A&M International University at Dustdevil Field.

MSU (7-0 overall) secures a two-game season sweep over TAMIU (4-5) with the win. Neither win was easy, however, with the Mustangs being severely tested before prevailing 2-0 in both games.

MSU took a 1-0 lead in tonight's game when Nathan Fitzgerald found the net on a bang, bang play after a shot from Dean Lovegrove deflected off TAMIU goalkeeper Emmanuel Frias in the 30th minute.

The score stood at that margin until MSU's Bryce Freeland slid a backward pass to David Freeland, who slipped the ball past Frias on a short-range shot in the 57th minute.

Midwestern State was issued its second red card of the game in the 59th minute, forcing the Mustangs to pack it in defensively the rest of the game. The strategy worked, with TAMIU managing three shots the rest of the contest and only one shot on goal.

Each team finished with eight shots with MSU holding a 6-3 edge in shots on goal. Frias finished with four saves for the Dustdevils and Raúl Herrera contributed three saves for the Mustangs.

TAMIU returns to Heartland Conference action on Sunday with a home game against UT-Permian Basin. Kickoff against the Falcons is scheduled for 3 p.m.
