TAMIU Knocks Off Oklahoma Panhandle State For First Win Of Season

Texas A&M International University pulled off a dramatic four-set (25-19, 22-25, 25-19, 26-24) win over Oklahoma Panhandle State on Thursday night in front of a season-high crowd of 445 fans on Dig Pink night at the TAMIU Kinesiology and Convocation Building. The hard-fought win was the first of the season for the Dustdevils.

TAMIU jumped out to a 10-2 lead en route to a set one win. The second set went back and forth with Bianca Mares' kill tying the score 20-20, marking the 10th tie of the set. OPSU went on a 4-1 run at that point to even the match at one set apiece.

The third set was also tight with TAMIU holding a 21-19 lead before reeling off four straight points to get the win. The set-clinching run was started by a back row kill by Desiree Ortiz and concluded by back-to-back kills by Liza Acosta and Alexandria Montemayor.

OPSU held a 20-15 lead in the fourth set before the Dustdevils rallied for an 11-4 run that secured the match win. Acosta and Montemayor each had two kills during that run and Jacquelynne Matula contributed one kill.

TAMIU (1-18, 1-6 Heartland) finished with season-high totals of 57 kills and 75 digs. OPSU (6-18, 2-6) finished with 37 kills and 65 digs.

Montemayor led the squad with 14 kills and 16 digs with Mares contributing 13 kills and four digs. Ortiz finished with a season-high 21 digs with Brittany Faison chipping in with 13 digs.

Cassandra Rivera finished with 27 assists and Faison contributed 21 assists.
