Final Stats
Texas A&M International University's men's basketball team has made a habit of playing close games against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi over the last several years. That trend continued in Saturday's exhibition opener against the NCAA Division I Islanders with TAMUCC pulling out a 64-54 win over the Dustdevils.
Steven Ivory made a lay-up at the 5:35 mark of the first half to provide TAMIU an 18-14 lead. The score was tied 20-20 before Corpus Christi went on an 8-2 run over the last three minutes of the half to take a 28-22 lead at the break.
TAMUCC took a 52-35 lead on a lay-up and free throw by Horace Bond at the 7:18 mark of the second half but TAMIU fought back to make a game of it. The final deficit was cut to ten points when Marcus Britt made two free throws with seven seconds remaining in regulation.
Preseason All-Heartland Conference selectee Will Faiivae led the Dustdevils with 20 points, 10 rebounds, three steals and two blocks. Marcus Britt finished with 11 points and James Silvie contributed eight points and five rebounds in his first game action in since the end of the 2007-08 season.
TAMIU will stay on the road and travel to Houston to face Conference USA opponent Rice in exhibition action on Monday night. Tip-off against the Owls is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Tudor Fieldhouse on the Rice campus.
