Texas A&M International University got off to a great start to its trip to paradise with a 69-59 win over the University of Hawaii at Hilo on Monday night at the UHH Gymnasium. The result stretched TAMIU's school-record winning streak to six games.
TAMIU (6-4) led by as many as 13 points in the first half and went to the locker room with a 38-29 halftime lead.
Luís Gómez hit a three-pointer to stretch the lead to 48-32 at the 15:04 mark of the second half. UHH (3-3) would whittle the Dustdevil lead down to 61-56 at the 3:24 mark but the Vulcans would get no closer than that five-point margin. TAMIU made eight of 10 free throw attempts over the final three minutes to help secure the win.
TAMIU made nine 3-pointers, marking the fifth straight game with nine or more treys, while limiting UHH to four of 17 shooting from beyond the arc.
Gómez made four 3-pointers and finished with a team-high 14 points for the Dustdevils. Armando Brito added 13 points and Evan Matteson contributed 10 points, a team-high 10 rebounds and four blocks.
TAMIU has two games remaining in its trip to the Aloha State. The Dustdevils will play at Hawaii Pacific on Wednesday night and Chaminade on Friday.
