Dec. 9, 2010

Final Stats

In a rematch of the first men's basketball game ever played by Texas A&M International University the Dustdevils invited their friends from south of the border in the Borregos of Monterrey Tech to the TAMIU Kinesiology and Convocation building on Thursday night. The Dustdevils rolled to an easy 91-54 victory in front of 373 fans.

The Dustdevils jumped out of the gates and opened the game with the first bucket and never looked back. It was the fourth straight win for the the Dustdevils (4-4), who dropped their first four games.

TAMIU managed to put five players in double figures on the evening including senior guard Luis Gomez's team high 17 points, all of which came in the first half. Evan Matteson (Jr.) and Brian Schaffer (Jr.) each contributed 13 points while Ryan McLucas (Jr.) and Will Faiivae (Sr.) each chipped in 10 points.

Leading the way for the Borregos was by far and away Jesus Q. Espinoza with a team high 19 points. This was 12 points more than his nearest teammate. Monterrey Tech would be hurt by turnovers, committing 17 turnovers to the Dustdevils nine.

The Dustdevils also held the edge on the glass for the night out-rebounding the Rams 37 to 28 including 11 second chance opportunities. The biggest advantage for TAMIU was the shooting from beyond the arch which showed no signs of slowing down after the last win when they managed to sink 15 treys against Barclay Christian. The Dustdevils made 11 3-pointers to the Borregos four treys.

The two squads will hook back up again Friday night at the Kinesiology and Convocation building starting with a 5 p.m. tip off. Don't forget to bring a toy for the Salvation Army toy drive. When you bring a toy to be dropped off you will receive free admission to the game.
