Texas A&M International University opened the 2010 season by splitting a non-conference doubleheader at Texas A&M-Kingsville on Monday afternoon. The Javelinas took the opener 4-3 and the Dustdevils rolled to a 12-4 win in game two.
TAMIU out-hit TAMUK 8-5 in the opener but the Dustdevils managed only one run through the first six innings and the Javelinas led 4-1 going into the seventh inning. Victoria Beltrán hit a two-run homerun in the top of the seventh inning to cut the deficit to 4-3 but the Dustdevil threat and the game ended when Samantha Carrillo struck out swinging with a runner on second base.
Beltrán took the loss after allowing four runs on five hits in 6.0 innings on the mound. She struck out four batters and allowed four walks.
A combination of three Dustdevil hits and four Javelina errors led to a five-run top of the first for TAMIU in the nightcap. Samantha García and Janelle Ruiz contributed RBI sac flies in the big inning for the Dustdevils.
TAMIU led 7-1 before blowing the game open with a four-run fourth inning. Freshman Marina Vásquez capped that game-clinching inning with a 2-RBI single up the middle that pushed the Dustdevil lead to 11-1.
Vásquez finished 3-for-4 at the plate while also picking up the win on the mound with a solid complete-game effort. She allowed four runs on seven hits with two walks and two strikeouts in 6.0 innings.
TAMIU will next play at the St. Mary's NCAA Division II College Classic on Thursday through Saturday. The Dustdevils open tournament play against Eastern New Mexico State and Angelo State on Thursday.
