Final Stats
Texas A&M International University and UT-Permian Basin opened the 2010 season with a doubleheader split on Monday afternoon at Veterans Field. The Dustdevils won the opener 5-3 before the Falcons stormed back for a 11-1 win in game two.
UTPB took a 2-0 lead in the top of the third of the opener before TAMIU slugger Zeke Sosa evened the score in the bottom of that frame with a two RBI double that glanced off the outstretched glove of the UTPB left fielder on the edge of the warning track.
TAMIU then scored two unearned runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to take a 4-2 lead before UTPB answered with one run in the top of the sixth inning. Ricky Hernández pushed the lead back to two runs with a RBI single to right field in the bottom of the sixth.
UTPB's Garrett Wolff led off with a single in the top of the seventh inning and a two-out error placed Falcon runners at first and second base. The game ended, however, when Dustdevil reliever John Gonzáles got Ryan Giacomini to ground into a fielder's choice out at second base.
Gonzáles picked up the save with no runs allowed on one hit in 1.1 innings of work. Sophomore Jorge Guarneros was credited with the win after allowing three runs on five hits in a 5.2 inning outing. He struck out six and walked three en route to recording his 10th career win.
UTPB scored five runs in the top of the seventh inning of game two to build a comfortable 7-1 lead. TAMIU loaded the bases in the bottom of that inning but the threat ended with a fly out to right field by Chris Collazo, a strikeout by Sosa and a ground out to second base by Curtis Schell.
The Falcons then put the game away with a four-run top of the eighth inning.
Mike McGillivray took the loss for the Dustdevils despite allowing only two runs (one earned) on one hit in 5.0 innings of work.
TAMIU and UTPB will conclude the series with a single game tomorrow. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
