Final Stats
Texas A&M International University's second half comeback came up just a little short in Thursday night's 62-59 Heartland Conference road loss against the first place Incarnate Word Cardinals.
UIW (17-6, 10-3 Heartland) finished the first half with a 6-1 run to take a 33-25 lead at the break. TAMIU (9-13, 6-6) cut the lead to three points early in the second half but the Cardinals bounced back to hold a 57-50 lead at the 4:01 mark.
The home team led 61-54 at the 1:59 mark before a 3-pointer by Luis Gómez and a jumper by Will Faiivae cut the lead to 61-59 with 24 seconds left in regulation.
Gómez fouled Shaun Umeh on UIW's ensuing possession. Umeh made of one of two free throws to push the Cardinal lead to 62-59.
TAMIU had one chance at a game tying basket but Bernard Burrell's missed a 3-pointer with seconds remaining, allowing Incarnate Word to escape with the win.
Gómez and St. Paul Latham tied for the team lead with 19 points apiece. Faiivae finished with a team-high 9 rebounds.
TAMIU will return to action on Saturday with a road game at St. Mary's. Tip-off against the Rattlers is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
